Singing groups with between three and 25 performers are invited to showcase their singing talents in a national competition.

Sing!, created by DDR Corp. for implementation at its properties throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, begins Friday and runs through May 31. Groups can complete an online entry form and upload an original audio performance of a song from the approved song list to the Deer Park Town Center Sing! website at deerparktowncenter.2011sing.com.

Ten groups will be selected through an online popular vote and Deer Park Town Center will select two alternates for a total of 12 semifinalists.

The semifinalists will perform live at Deer Park Town Center Sept. 17 and Sept. 24. The pool of 12 will be whittled to three by a panel of local judges and audience text voting, followed by another round of online voting to identify one finalist to represent Deer Park Town Center and compete against 10 other finalists from the other properties. A final online and text vote will determine the grand-prize winning group.

"Arts and education has always been a top corporate objective and the impact music has on both the arts and education makes Sing! a natural fit for our company," said Konda Dees, Deer Park Town Center marketing director. "Sing! brings a positive and empowering experience to our communities, gives back to a deserving nonprofit and who knows, may provide a 'big break' to a talented, undiscovered group."

Sing! provide vocal groups, choirs, choruses, gospel singers and glee clubs with exposure they may have never experienced before. Throughout the competition, Deer Park Town Center will highlight the competitors through online and social media.

"Sing! combines the growing trend of online, viral performances with the thrill of live music to create an opportunity for groups in our community to showcase their talents," Dees added. "With the support of Kevin Briody, we are thrilled to launch Sing! and promote the positive impact music has in our lives."

The Grand Prize winner will receive an opportunity to participate in a singing, songwriting and recording session with two-time Emmy award-winner Kevin Briody, as well as receive a $5,000 DDR Corp. MasterCard gift cards and a $20,000 donation to the charity of the winning group's choice.

Ridgefield Singer/Songwriter Kevin Briody Wins Another Emmy!

briodystoryThe 36th annual Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place last night in Los Angeles and Kevin Briody won a second Emmy for his original song “We All Fall Down”.  Briody composed the song for ABC’s One Life To Live and won in the category of Outstanding Original Song for a Drama Series.

The awards recognize the best in all creative components of daytime television.  Alex Trebek, the host of the popular “Jeopardy!” was last night’s emcee.

Kevin and Lynne are presently en-route back to Ridgefield.  Congratulations Kevin!

Kevin Briody, a wonderful songwriter, singer and guitarist from Connecticut, impressed a crowd at the Rose Garden Coffeehouse in Mansfield, Mass., a couple of years back. He was a finalist in the coffeehouse’s performing songwriter contest and came back in 2006 as an opener.

Turns out that Kevin wrote a song for ABC’s daytime soap “One Life To Live.” The song, “My Little Star,” according to Kevin’s web site, “was written for a specific scene on the show where mom (Kassie DePaiva/Blair Cramer) is talking with daughter (Kristen Alderson/Starr Manning) as she makes ready for the prom.”

Kevin sent visual proof of the Emmy, awarded on June 13, so we know he was there, complete with tux. I honestly can’t say I can sit through the soap’s rendering of the song, but I’m happy Kevin’s music is making a mark. Sorry, Kevin.

In any case, check out Kevin’s web site, as well. He has three CDs, plus a wonderful Christmas CD. His signature song, in my mind anyway, is “Walnuts and Rice,” one of the tunes he performed at the Rose Garden in 2006. You can hear a clip of that song and photos of Kevin in a slideshow from that show, followed by a song by Mark Erelli.

"This was one terrific discovery. He’s a storyteller. A top-drawer troubadour with an earnest, heart-filled folkie delivery. Seek this CD out and fall under its spell.”

“Connecticut songwriter Kevin Briody is cut from the honest, artful cloth of the best Yankee ballad-writers. His narrative songs are personal yet cinematic, filled with vivid, pastoral imagery and useful wisdom. He seems to earn new fans and folk-biz boosters wherever his songs travel”
